A Covington woman was killed early Saturday while riding a bike when she was hit by a vehicle on the 11th Street Bridge between Newport and Covington.
Newport Police reported that officers responded to the scene at around 12:30 a.m. Saturday but by the time they arrived, the vehicle suspected in the deadly crash had fled the scene.
In a statement issued to LINK nky on Sunday, Newport Police said that the investigation is ongoing and that no further details were able to be released at present.
Investigators are reconstructing the deadly crash to learn more, police said. There was no information available about the suspect vehicle.
Though police did not publicly identify the woman, Roebling Point Books & Coffee identified her as Gloria San Miguel, a longtime employee.
Owner Richard Hunt said that San Miguel worked at both the Covington and Newport locations where she was responsible for the coffeeshop and bookstore’s well-known inspirational quote art displayed on chalk boards.
Roebling Point posted to Instagram a new display on its chalk board reading, “We all have a Gloria-size hole in our hearts. We will miss her profoundly, far beyond what words can describe. She was our bright star. We loved her and she loved everyone. Dear Zach and Luna, we will always keep her spirit, her smile, and her song here. We’ll see her dance around corners and her energy will stay and grace our days.”
San Miguel leaves behind her partner Zach Vickers, and a young daughter, Luna.
She was a supporter of the Orchard Park community garden in Covington’s Westside neighborhood and recently begun to focus on the Newport location of Roebling Point Books & Coffee as “den mother”, Hunt said.
The coffeeshop is collecting funds at the counter at both locations, Hunt said, in support of San Miguel. A separate GoFundMe account has already raised more than $13,000 as of 1 p.m. Sunday.
